The City of Marsing was known by other names prior to June 1922 when a newspaper referred, for the first time, the City of Marsing.  Prior to then, Marsing was known as Erb or Butte.  The railroad continued to use "Erb" as their destination name for Marsing until 1937.

Several events played major roles in the creation of the City of Marsing.

An increase in the population created by the initiation of the Gem Irrigation District led the way to increased farming development.

The building of a bridge across the Snake River near the current city of Marsing, allowed for a dependable year round route between Owyhee and Canyon counties.

The arrival of the railroad opened up easy market access for goods and crops grown in Owyhee County.
